Traditional Crowns & Bridges

We often recommend dental crowns and fixed bridges to repair tooth decay or trauma, restoring patients’ smiles to their full form and function. Dental crowns are shaped to fit completely over the top of a damaged tooth replacing lost dental structure and protecting the damaged tooth. A fixed bridge is a series of dental crowns connected in a row. The two on either end of the prosthetic are attached to surrounding teeth to support one or more replacement teeth.

Dr. Davis Places White Fillings to Preserve Health and Appearance

Do you have concerns about mercury fillings in your teeth? At Smiles of Santa Fe, we practice conservative dentistry that protects your health and the environment.

Instead of mercury amalgam, Dr. Davis places composite resin fillings. Similar to the materials used in airplane construction, tooth-colored composite resin bonds to tooth structure, adding strength and sealing out decay-causing bacteria, while maintaining your all-white smile.

Dr. Davis Offers Root Canals, Conservative Dentistry to Preserve Your Smile

I’d rather have a root canal! How many times have you said that? Historically, root canals have had negative connotations, but with modern advances and anxiety-relieving medications, root canals are now considered comfortable, conservative, safe procedures that allow patients to keep damaged, natural teeth intact. A root canal can help you avoid the trauma and expense of extraction and replacement. It will also allow you to retain your natural bite, which reduces your potential for occlusal complications and related pain.

A deep cavity, traumatic injury, or tooth fracture can damage the sensitive pulp within a tooth’s canal. Also called the nerve of the tooth, this pulp is susceptible to bacterial infection, which can kill the pulp, stimulate increased blood flow, and create pressure within the tooth. This can cause severe oral pain and may initiate bone degeneration, tooth loss, and the spread of an infection. During root canal therapy, Dr. Davis will clean and disinfect your tooth’s root, then seal it against further infection. The whole process is so comfortable that many patients doze off!

Dentures & Partials

Patients who have experienced extensive tooth loss may struggle to complete even the most ordinary daily tasks such as speaking and chewing. For these patients, we may recommend partial or full dentures. Partial dentures, often referred to simply as partials, fill in gaps in patients’ smiles. A gum-colored base is shaped to fit between teeth and support the replacement teeth. The partial is held in place with metal clasps connected to remaining dental structures. Full dentures are similarly composed by attaching a row of replacement teeth to a gum-colored base. Instead of attaching to healthy teeth, the full denture is molded to fit snuggly against the gums where it is stabilized through natural suction.

Extractions

In some situations, we’re unable to repair teeth despite our best efforts. In these cases, we may recommend one or more teeth be extracted to ensure patients retain the optimal level of oral health. Our skilled team will make tooth extraction as comfortable, safe, and effective as possible. Some of our common reasons for extracting teeth include:

Wisdom tooth Extraction

The most commonly extracted teeth are third molars, commonly referred to as wisdom teeth. This final set of teeth to erupt into the smile line often cause other teeth to shift, become impacted (unable to erupt from the gum line), or create crowding due to inadequate space within the jawline. Wisdom teeth typically erupt between the ages of 17 and 25, but we’ll be able to view the developing teeth using x-rays long before they erupt. Once wisdom teeth have developed below the gum line, we can provide recommendations to keep or extract these teeth.
